Hotel rooms — somewhere that I have been no stranger to over the past few months. Checking in and checking out, learning the tricks to keeping sane while on the road, and more. After being out on business all day, retreating to the hotel room as been a place of peace, some where to disconnect.

It wasn’t until this last month that I realized I’ve built up some habits along the way. Similar to my other post (5 things I always do on an airplane), there are definitely things in a hotel room I always almost do. So here it is…

5 things I always and never do in a hotel room…

1. (always) Remove the top cover on the bed…

This is one of the dirtiest places in the hotel, most people know this, but do you remove it? I take it off and stuff it in the closet as just the thought of it kinda grosses me out. The top cover or duvet is rarely cleaned and can pick up a bit of germs.

2. (never) Use the glass cups to drink water…

Someone tipped me off in the hotel industry, that often cleaning staff will not run the cups through a dishwasher, but rather are just wiped down with the cleaning towel — the same one use to wipe down the counter top. Now of course all hotels don’t do this but better safe than sorry.

3. (always) Fully unpack my suitcase, hang clothes, and settle in…

Not having one home has pushed me to make homes of wherever I am. The hotel is home, even for just a night, I always unpack to settle in and try to be where I am.

4. (never) Walk around barefoot…

One word: dirty.

5. (always) Check under the bed…

I do this at home and on the road. It’s one of those habits…

Do you guys have any habits you do in a hotel room? I would love to hear!

  1. Always check for bedbugs between mattress and top covering as well as behind any pictures or paintings over bed.

  2. Never use the coffee machine in the room. I’ve heard stories of people washing their clothes in them. Go downstairs instead

  3. I always put my used towels in the bathtub or shower so the cleaners know to take them, and I never put the ironing board back where it was stored… Oops! And I always check the room first before closing the door! x

  4. I leave one of the keys inside when I have to go out for Air conditioning. Sometimes you have those plastic "activators" attached to the keys and I just leave one in the slot so the room is not stuffy when I come back. Mr K and I are always together so we just need one key anyways. Also never go bare feet anywhere in the room. Two words "athletes foot". I always check towels for stains. And now I always ask for a quiet room BEFORE we get to the room. They seem to honor the request every time.
