A short hour and half drive, and you approach the rolling hills of Tuscany. Set just outside of the hilltop town of San Gimignano, the Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel is the retreat that even local Italians head to for relaxation and rejuvenation.
When I arrived, the first thing noticed was the expansive views of Tuscany. The prime location of the Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel is hard to beat — almost 360-degree views. You can spot the lights of San Gimignano, see the vineyards, or stroll the property’s own olive tree farm. Greeted with a friendly smile and cold glass of water (the heat was in full force), I was excited to checkout the rest of the hotel.
When the hotel name says “spa” in it, the Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel truly means it. An exquisite and rather large indoor and outdoor spa awaits in the main building, with all necessary amenities like saunas, a turkish bath, and a hammam. Across the main building, after a walk under hanging vines, you come to large patio that gives way to their pool. Set at the peak of the property, a poolside day is equally as scenic as anywhere else in Tuscany.
The restaurants at Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel offer an opportunity to not have to leave the hotel for most of your meals. The Losteria Cuisine and cafe, sits atop the main building, with views over the olive trees, where you can dine for breakfast, and enjoy casual dining in the evening. I ate one night at the fine dining restaurant named Lampolla, which was a perfect end to a long day on the road, not having to leave the hotel, and enjoying tasty local cuisine.
When it comes to the rooms, the Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel has two buildings, one which is the original villa , and a newer building. I chose to stay in the old villa, as it had more of the old-world Italian look with tiles, linens, and brightly decorated furnishings. I loved waking up each day to the view from our terrace, watching the fog roll out as the sun started to peak through.
The Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel was my first introduction to Tuscany, and made for a great stepping-stone to exploring the region. With incredible customer service, the team helped tailor the time to exactly what I was looking for, and even booked an incredible dinner near town. The stay at the Villasanpaolo Spa Hotel felt like I was living like a local, in a beautiful Italian villa.
