Very rarely do the marriage of modern amenities and historic charm meet with such grace. While exploring Belgium, we had the opportunity to experience such a luxury at B & B De Waterzooi.
With stunning views of Gravensteen Castle and just steps from the photogenic old town, this b&b could not be a more perfect stepping stone for exploring Gent. After being warmly welcomed by the owners, Kay and Christian, we immediately felt at home. The attention to detail and the care they pour into their business permeates throughout the grounds leaving you inspired.
Situated on the castle courtyard, the B & B De Waterzooi Lodge’s location cannot be beat. This beautifully renovated church boasts of three luxurious bedrooms, a welcoming dining room, and a quaint courtyard. Each morning we were greeted with a delicious, homemade breakfast, reminding us to take our time and soak in each moment. It made it tough to leave for the day, as the enchantment of the space beckoned for more time. The breakfasts hold a bit of surprise as they have make a new addition to the menu each morning — one day we had homemade french toast and another, a classic cheese croissant.
Stepping into the Farouche suite, the bright space was mesmerizing. The room (and every room) features a separate living quarter, a large soaking tub, and an adjustable bed. Extra touches like cozy décor, plush linens, and tea and coffee to last your stay make the room even more inviting. While the rooms provide the ultimate retreat, the hustle and bustle of the town is just as lively in the square below. The Farouche suite opened up to an expansive deck with a view over Gent — it was the perfect spot to catch the sunset each night with a glass of wine in hand.
What once existed as a place of rest, solitude, and sanctuary, has been restored allowing you to experience Belgian history and charm in a new way. Kay and Christian are exceptional and have created a space so unique, it is worth a trip to Gent itself. In Dutch there is the word “gezelligheid” that translates to the kind of coziness you feel when you are with someone familiar, or perhaps the coziness of a space — it was this exact warm feeling we felt as departed from our time at B & B De Waterzooi.
