As our first time in Melbourne, I had not a clue where to stay. After hours of research and narrowing it down to a few hotels, I had this draw to the Hotel Windsor. Perhaps it reminded me of my childhood walking through the grand hotels in Paris or the iconic St. Francis in San Francisco, there was something grabbing in the photos. The pictures of this Grand Hotel really do not do it justice. The entrance stands out and the double towers loom over the street. As you walk in on the magical “red carpet,” and the doormen greets you with a friendly smile, you feel as if you have stepped back in time.

The lobby is iconic as you look up and stare upwards into the multiple floors surrounded by the grand staircase. The room is filled with large vases with the freshest flowers and stunning linens. You feel like you have entered into a British empire and royalty is just around the corner. The hotel has rich history, as it first opened in 1883. It is the world’s oldest Grand Hotel. Heavily influenced by British design, the fit-out makes for a cultural experience.

Staying in one of the basic rooms could have been bigger then some of the larger rooms Stateside. As you enter you room it’s hard not to notice the tall ceilings, the large walk-in closet and the marble bathroom. The room is charming with small aspects to it like the sitting desk or retro old side tables with old radios that give it charm. The coziness of the stunning linens and refined furnishing make for a great stay.

The hotel lies across from a beautiful park and the parliament building (request a room with a view). The location of this hotel could not have been more perfect. You could walk to everything, the South Bank, Fitzroy and any other shopping needs you might have. The service was phenomenal, the front desk helpful and even gave us an early check-in. I was so happy with my stay that I look forward to the next opportunity to come again.

The Hotel Windsor is a great hotel to stay in for location, luxury, and top service. It takes you back in time and lets you experience the true British roots of Melbourne. Cheers.
