Driving along the Amalfi Coastline consists of many small surprises on one big stretch of scenic views. Through each steep turn along the cliff side boasts a new view of a magical town. I loved peering out of the window to see what would be next as the way was made from Ravello to Positano. Each town had something new to experience, whether a duomo to venture into, a long shopped filled street, or a tasty treat.
Crunched for time between stops in Europe, I could not pass on the opportunity to go see Pompeii. Staying in Sorrento, I was headed to the Naples airport for my next destination and knew I would be driving right by a chance of a lifetime. Arriving at Pompeii, my driver was clear that all I had was 2 hours to walk around and see all that I could. For those of who you who have been to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, know that clearly 2 hours is not enough time to do the full experience and that 5 or 6 hours is more appropriate. So I put on my shoes, grabbed a bottle of water, and put my game face on.
The first stop and well known town out of the Italian coastline treasures is the quaint destination of Sorrento. Known for limoncello, lively street music, and a bustling marketplaces, Sorrento is a destination for everyone. Each corner holds surprising new flavors of gelato, a new memorabilia with the famous lemon designed on it, and of course cafes you can smell a mile away. This town holds as the gateway to many popular destinations through the coastline of Italy. Only 30 minutes away from Ravello, Positano, and Amalfi, it makes for a great home base for indulging in the Mediterranean lifestyle. For those who crave a little adventure on the waters, the island of Capri is just a ferry ride away and can be easily experienced in just a day’s worth of time.
