During my week-long trip through Raleigh, North Carolina, I spent time exploring the culinary scene of the capital city. As a traveler, I love getting the chance to experience the diversity of dining, and Raleigh didn’t disappoint.
Raleigh is gaining well-deserved recognition in the food scene. The city’s vibrant mix of traditional Southern fare and innovative cuisine makes for a wide range of experiences. The culinary landscape here is marked by a deep respect for local ingredients (something I appreciate for a sense of place), with many chefs championing the farm-to-table movement.
If you are wondering how serious the food is, there are several James Beard Award-winning chefs and a Forbes 5-Star restaurant (one of sixty-four in the world) all right there. My experience? Try a few different styles of restaurants to get a deeper understanding of Raliegh. You won’t be disappointed.

There may not be a better place to start your fine dining experience in Raleigh than Herons. Technically in the city of Cary, it’s within 10 minutes of Downtown Raleigh. Heron’s is one of only 64 Forbes Five-Star restaurants worldwide, so making a reservation for a special evening is a must-do. It’s a whimsical coursed-out dinner that Chef Steven Greene takes you through. Experience Southern-inspired dishes with global favors, and cheeky plays on food like their “elevated corn dog”. It’s a delightful meal and match it with their wine pairings for a memorable meal and special occasion.

As a five-time James Beard Award Semifinalist, Chef Scott Crawford has several restaurants in Raleigh. The latest Chef Scott Crawford adventure finds you in the newish Raleigh Iron Works district at the restaurant Brodeto. An ode to Croatian-Italian cuisine inspired by travels through the region. The result? A very fun, ingredient-forward experience set in an airy, open-kitchen restaurant. Try their whipped ricotta, order the hand-crafted Croatian Pogača bread, and don’t skip the housemade pasta dishes.
