I had the chance to explore the Cologne Christmas markets last year as a stop on a Viking River cruise with my mom, and they quickly became the highlight of our trip. We spent a full day wandering through stalls under twinkling lights, sipping Glühwein beneath a canopy of stars, and snacking on roasted almonds as carols echoed through the streets. It was everything you imagine a European Christmas should be.
With six festive markets spread across the city, Cologne is one of the most magical places to visit during the holiday season. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Cologne Cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge stretching across the Rhine, each market has its own unique charm — from the towering tree at the Cathedral market to the cozy, medieval feel of the Winter Fairytale in Alter Markt. Wooden huts brim with handcrafted gifts, and the scent of mulled wine and cinnamon fills the air.

Dates
The dates for the 2025 Christmas markets start as early as November 14th, and most are open until December 23; however, some run until January 4, 2026. Individual market dates vary, and I’ve included those within this guide.
Opening Hours
This year, the markets are open from 11 am to 9 pm daily, and until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Some markets open slightly different hours, so double-check in advance and plan your visit accordingly.

What You Need to Know About the Cologne Christmas Market
The Best Way to Get to Cologne
Cologne has an international airport, Cologne Bonn Airport, that is connected to destinations all across Europe. You can also reach Cologne by flying into Düsseldorf and then taking a 30-minute train to Cologne, or arriving at Frankfurt International Airport, from there you can reach Cologne by train in just under one hour. Trains can book out during the holidays and on weekends, so I recommend booking tickets in advance.
Where to Park if Driving to Cologne
If you’re driving to Cologne, it’s a good idea to plan your parking in advance — especially on weekends when the city center gets particularly busy. Q-Park has several paid parking lots throughout Cologne centre, with the option to pre-book your parking spot too.
The most convenient location is in the pedestrian zone Breite Straße: Du Mont Carré. This parking lot is only five minutes from Neumarkt and ten minutes from Cologne Central train station. Expect ~€21 for 24 hours for pre-booked spaces.

The Cologne Christmas markets are among the best in Europe and are worth visiting. With several iconic locations across the city, from the Angel Market to Heinzel’s Winter Fairytale (Heinzels Wintermärchen), it is one of my favorite cities to enjoy the Christmas markets, and it made for a great stop on my Viking Christmas Market cruise last year.
Are There Restrooms at the Market?
Yes, most of the markets I visited had temporary public restrooms available. You should expect to pay a small fee to use the restrooms, usually between €0.50 and €1.
Do You Need Tickets for the Cologne Christmas Market?
No, you don’t need to purchase a ticket to visit any of the Christmas markets in Cologne. However, you will need to pay for certain activities at the markets, such as ice skating or kids’ crafts.
How Crowded is the Cologne Christmas Market?
Cologne’s Christmas markets are some of the most popular in Germany, drawing crowds from near and far. Weekends and the days leading up to Christmas are the busiest. To avoid the crowds, I recommend visiting on a weekday and in the morning or early afternoon.
Are There Mugs Available in Cologne?
Yes, mugs are available when you purchase drinks like mulled wine or hot chocolate. I love that the different Christmas markets in Cologne have their design, so there are lots to collect. When you purchase a hot drink, you’ll pay a deposit (pfund) of €4 for the cup in addition to the price of the drink. If you return the cup, you’ll receive the money back, or you can keep it as a souvenir.
Do I Need Cash for the Cologne Christmas Markets?
Most stalls at the Cologne Christmas markets accept both credit cards and cash, but some are cash-only. Be sure to carry cash — preferably small bills — and coins for public restrooms.

The Cologne Christmas Market Locations
Cologne transforms into a festive winter wonderland each winter, with six Christmas markets spread across the city center. Although its first market opened later than others in Germany (in 1820), most of today’s beloved markets emerged in the 20th century, creating the magical atmosphere the city is now known for.
I’ve listed my favorite markets first, but they each offer something different, so it’s worth checking out as many as you can during your Christmas visit.
Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market
The most iconic and picturesque of Cologne’s markets sits at the base of Cologne Cathedral. With over 100 festive events, a towering Christmas tree, and a canopy of twinkling fairy lights, it’s a must-visit on any holiday trip.
I love the variety of stalls here — from handicrafts and regional gifts to hot food and sweet treats. It’s also a great option for families, with a dedicated children’s program Tuesday through Thursday featuring puppet shows, face painting, and plays. Due to its popularity, I recommend visiting early in the day before exploring the other markets.

The Christmas Market in Cologne’s Old Town (Heinzel’s Wintermaerchen)
Heinzel’s Wintermaerchen is my favorite Christmas market in Cologne. Themed around the “Heinzelmännchen” — friendly, gnomes-like house spirits — it feels like pure magic with its timber chalets, ice rink, and Ferris wheel. I loved the variety of handmade gifts, from ornaments to wooden homewares and cozy knits. With plenty for kids and a longer season that runs into January, it’s ideal for families and post-Christmas visits.
Location: In the Old Town between Alter Markt and Heumarkt
The Angels’ Market
I think the Angels’ Market is the most beautiful market in Cologne, with glowing paper stars, hanging lights, and pairs of angels wandering through the stalls. Markt der Engel has a romantic feel, with sweet treats and upscale bars that make it perfect for couples and friends. The angel-themed mugs are a charming touch, and it’s best visited in the late afternoon or evening when the lights sparkle and the food options go beyond the usual bratwurst and goulash.

Harbour Christmas Market
Set along the waterfront near the Cologne Harbour and Chocolate Museum, the smaller Harbour Christmas Market features around 70 white tented stalls that resemble sails. It’s less traditional than the others, with a stronger focus on food and drink — including pirate ship–themed mulled wine stands. If you only have one day, I’d prioritize the other markets first.

Nikolausdorf
The Village of St Nicholas is a great choice for families, with a singing moose, giant Christmas mugs to take photos in, and a few games and interactive areas for children. Feeling like you’ve stepped right into Santa’s village, the location on Rudolfplatz right next to the old city walls adds to the festive charm. Taking on a more traditional style, the market is full of half-timbered houses, festive garlands, and plenty of Christmas lights.

The Christmas Market in the Stadtgarten
A newer addition to Cologne’s Christmas scene, the Stadtgarten Christmas market is set in the Belgian Quarter, just outside the city center. I love that the vendor stalls rotate weekly, offering something new each time. It’s open evenings only on weekdays (from 4 pm) and from midday on weekends.

What to Eat at the Cologne Christmas Markets
One of the best parts of visiting the Cologne Christmas markets is the food. From steaming mugs of Glühwein to hearty street snacks and sweet seasonal treats, there’s something delicious at every turn. Here’s what to try while you wander — plus a few great restaurants in Cologne for a proper sit-down meal.
Best Beverages
- Glühwein, hot, mulled wine that is available in red, white, and several other fruit varieties in Cologne, including blackberry and raspberry
- Apfel-zimt, hot, mulled apple and cinnamon cider that I’ve only seen at German Christmas markets
- Hot Chocolate, you can usually add Baileys or rum if you’d like to make this an alcoholic version
- Kinderpunsch, non-alcoholic alternative to mulled wine with a bit more of a fruit-juice flavor
- Eierpunsch, a German take on eggnog and often made with Advocaat
Travel Tip: When you order a drink, it will come in a Christmas mug for around 4 euros (you can keep it if you like), but you can return it to any drink vendor and they will give you the deposit back.
Best Savory Food
- Bratwurst, grilled German sausage often served in a roll, and there are usually a few options, including with cheese or spicy sausages
- Reibekuchen, fried potato pancakes topped with applesauce or camembert and cranberry sauce
- Flammlachs, grilled salmon cooked over an open fire
- Spätzle, a small cheesy noodle-like dish usually served with onion and bacon
- Handbrot mit Käse, baked bread stuffed with cheese, sometimes with bacon or mushrooms too
Best Sweet Food
- Lebkuchen, you can’t visit Germany and skip gingerbread
- Schaumkuss, chocolate-coated marshmallows in a variety of flavors, including coconut, mint, baileys, coffee, strawberry, and more
- Apelstrudel, a baked dessert made of spiced apple and raisins wrapped in pastry, often served with cream or custard
- Gebrannte Mandeln, sweet, crunchy roasted almonds

- Brauhaus FRÜH am Dom, for a traditional German beer hall atmosphere and food, is a must. You’ll find yourself mingling with locals and tourists as classic German dishes like Spaetzle and Schnitzel fill tables.
- Bei Oma Kleinmann, a much-loved restaurant specializing in Schnitzels with a highly customizable menu.
- Rievkoochebud Reibekuchen, the best place for Cologne’s much-loved potato pancakes with an array of toppings and sauces straight from the griddle to you via a street window.

Cologne has some truly magical corners during the holidays, especially in and around the Christmas markets. Unlike cities like Strasbourg or Colmar, most of the festive displays are concentrated within the markets themselves. The largest and most popular Christmas market in Cologne is set against the backdrop of Cologne Cathedral, the city’s iconic Gothic Cathedral. It’s the perfect spot to take in the towering Christmas tree framed by the Cathedral and a canopy of twinkling lights.
Ice Skating Rink at Heinzel’s Winter Fairytale
Is there anything more magical than ice skating at Christmas? At Heinzel’s Winter Fairytale, you can watch skaters glide below from a suspended bridge — or lace up your own skates and cruise past the cozy wooden huts that line the rink.
Angel’s Market
With its delicate decorations and soft glow, the Angel’s Market is perfect for nighttime photos. Fairy lights and paper stars hang from the trees and above the walkways, giving the entire square a dreamy, whimsical feel.

The Cologne Christmas markets are filled with handmade and regional products, making it easy to pick up souvenirs and gifts for loved ones.
