There’s something about the places that you discover while traveling that makes them feel extra special. For me, San Pantaleo is exactly that. If you’re coming to Sardinia, you’ll want to put this charming town on your places to visit.
I visited the town as a quick stop during my trip when I spent a few weeks exploring Sardinia while based in the incredible coastline of Costa Smeralda. When I was researching my trip, I thought San Pantaleo would be perfect for an aperativo and some shopping. But, once I got there, I love it so much I came back for a second, longer visit.
For me, the best way to see the town is to simply wander all the small streets. As you do, you’ll find a great set of boutiques and restaurants, and a bustling central square, all framed by the granite peaks. The best way I can say it is San Pantaleo has that “if you know, you know” feeling. And, as one of the oldest towns along the Costa Smeralda, San Pantaleo is effortlessly charming.
The surroundings here are stunning, and the light in particular makes everything gorgeous. During sunset, the village gets cast in the most amazing golden glow. Then everyone gathers in the central square for drinks and dinner. I found walking through the streets of San Pantaleo had a similar feel to walking around Deia in Mallorca. In the same way, San Pantaleo feels like an effortlessly chic hidden gem in mountains.

Things to Know About Visiting San Pantaleo
Where is San Pantaleo Located?
San Pantaleo sits just inland from the coast in the northeastern part of Sardinia. It is a short 20-minute drive inland from Porto Cervo, which is part of the Costa Smeralda. If you’re flying into Olbia, the airport on the Costa Smeralda, San Pantaleo is just around a 25-minute drive. I absolutely love the entire Costa Smeralda, and San Pantaleo is just a short drive away.
San Pantaleo is located in Costa Smeralda, Northeastern Sardinia, 20 minutes inland from Porto Cervo or 25 minutes from Olbia Airport. The town is easy to get to from much of Costa Smeralda.
How Much Time Do You Need to Visit San Pantaleo?
An afternoon is enough to get a good sense of the town, but it’s a great spot to come back to a couple of times. As a tiny town in Sardinia, it won’t take long before you’ve walked through it all. San Pantaleo is a great place to stop by for a morning of shopping and strolling, before an afternoon on the coast.
That being said, if you’re looking for a quiet spot to base yourself within the northeastern part of Sardinia, it’s a great option. If you’d rather be away from the busy coast and are happy to spend your days simply relaxing, you could stay much longer.
Does San Pantaleo Make a Good Base for Visiting Costa Smeralda?
San Pantaleo could be a good option if you’re looking for something quieter and more relaxing. A couple of hotel options in the countryside just outside of town are Petra Segreta Resort and Cascioni Eco Retreat. Both are close enough to enjoy the restaurants and shopping.
Otherwise, staying along the Costa Smeralda itself is an amazing option. If you’re looking for ocean views or to spend your days beachside, this is always my recommendation. Or, if you’re looking for something a bit livelier with more restaurants, the coast itself is a great place to be.
Where to Park to Visit San Pantaleo?
Like so many small towns in Italy, the streets in San Pantaleo are quite narrow. While it’s possible to park in town, spots are pretty limited. We got lucky and were able to park in this small lot right in town both times. Most of the available parking is in gravel lots on the edge of town. For example, we saw a lot of people parking along Via Guiseppe, which is a good backup option, as it’s a close walk into the center of town.
Travel Tip: Thursday is market day in town, so expect things to be much busier and parking harder to find. Arriving early is your best bet to find a parking spot.

People have been flocking to the Costa Smeralda region for decades. And, when you visit, it’s easy to see why. The natural beauty pulls you in, with the stunning mountain landscape and the emerald coastal waters. In fact, “smeralda” is a version of “smeraldo” in Italian, which translates to emerald! And, San Pantaleo offers a peaceful and creative village atmosphere that feels truly special. Whether you stay right in San Pantaleo or outside closer to the coast, it’s well worth a visit.

What Exactly to Do in San Pantaleo
Explore the Cobblestone Streets and Alleys
San Pantaleo is small and perfect for exploring on foot. Walking along the streets is the best way to experience the town’s slow pace and beauty. The Chiesa di San Pantaleo is hard to miss and well worth wandering towards, as the church is one of San Pantaleo’s main buildings.
The Piazza della Chiesa surrounds the church and hosts the Thursday Market. So, if you’re visiting for that, you’ll wind up seeing it. But, even if you visit on a non-market day, it’s a great place to get a sense of the town’s atmosphere. Plus, it was a filming location for “The Spy Who Loved Me,” the iconic James Bond movie.
Shop Local Artisans
For such a tiny town, San Pantaleo has some amazing local shopping. I loved visiting Yashu e Prem, a boutique with incredible patterned and colorful dresses and more. Another spot to add to your list is KAMPOS, with beautiful swimwear perfect for days along the Sardinian beaches.
TIPICO, a couple of streets down, has an amazing selection of local and specialty grocery items. For any food lovers or cooks in your life, it’s definitely worth a stop. Just nearby, I loved all the beautiful ceramics at DomoMea. Wandering down the town’s streets, you’re sure to stumble across them all.
Catch the Weekly Market
In the summer, Thursday is market day in San Pantaleo. I was able to time one of my visits with the market and it’s definitely worth going if you can. There was a good mix of stalls with crafts, ceramics, and more. If you’re looking for something high-quality and genuinely unique, it’s perfect for souvenirs. I’ve found it can get busy in the summer, so your best bet is to arrive in the morning and try to beat the crowds. I’d grab a quick espresso at Caffe Nina, then explore the market.
Get an Aperitivo at Caffe Nina
Right in the center of San Pantaleo, Caffe Nina is the gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. Stop here for an aperitivo to end your day of exploring, or before dinner. The cafe feels like an iconic spot in San Pantaleo and is quite popular for coffee and drinks all day. It’s hard to spend a more relaxing afternoon than having a coffee on the square and enjoying the scene! We spent an hour here before sunset one evening, and it was lovely.
Have Dinner or Lunch at One of the Local Restaurants
I was so impressed by the restaurants in San Pantaleo. Not only was the food fresh and delicious (so much good seafood!), but the atmosphere was lively yet relaxed. One of my favorites is right on the main piazza, Casa Boheme. This cute little bistro has a changing menu with seasonal ingredients, and also includes oysters and a raw bar. The interiors are cozy and filled with art, and there’s also a terrace for outdoor dining.
A couple other options worth considering are:
- Ristorante Giagoni, for modern Sardinian cuisine in a stone house
- Ristorante L’Assagio, for elevated Sardinian sea food and mussels
See the Local Nuraghe Sites
Nuraghe are stone structures that date back thousands of years. They’re relics of the Nuragic civilization that once existed on Sardinia, and are unique to the island. With that in mind, they’re definitely worth a visit during your stay. They’re also a great stop if you’re traveling with kids. Our 4-year-old daugther loved exploring them.
If I had to pick one near San Pantaleo, I’d visit Nuraghe Albucciu, which is only a short 15-minute drive from town. Of the many nuraghe sites I visited during my trip to Sardinia, this was one of the most interesting. This nuraghe is surrounded by beautiful nature and is right by the town of Arzachena. Visiting one of these sites is really magical, especially when you think of people constructing them thousands of years ago!
