Nestled on 14,000 acres of land, the Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico is for those looking to escape into a destination unlike no other. Only a short thirty-five minute drive from San Juan’s airport, you arrive to paradise in no time.

Pulling up to the resort entrance, the lush landscape and lily pond that leads to the entrance is enough to wow. Stepping through, you can see the turquoise waters that await for a cooling dip. A Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a special place as it preserves a sanctuary of land, in this case at Dorado Beach it’s the land that Laurence S. Rockefeller opened over fifty years ago as an eco-resort. The room count is smaller than your typical resort, providing an intimate service and luxury experience for the traveler. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is no short of an escape to those looking to relax under the Puerto Rican sun.

There’s hardly a reason to leave Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. It seems that everything you could have thought of, they’ve already squared away. With dining as a highlighted experience at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve the wide range of restaurants means there is no shortage of choices. Mornings start at Mi Casa by José Andrés, where you dine beachside with a choice of a la carte or the breakfast table. At breakfast be sure to try the “Huevos a la cubana ‘Like José’s mom made'” at least once, it will not disappoint. With a focus on fresh ingredients and elevated dining, the culinary journey continues to options like Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill or the Positivo Sandbar for lunch (try the ahi tuna poke at Positivo). At night, Positivo Sandbar transforms into a Japanese-inspired menu with fresh sushi and small plates perfected for an evening of dining with an ocean view. For other dinner options, Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill has a seafood menu and Mi Casa focuses on local ingredients redefined by José Andrés in flavorful dishes.

For those looking to elevate their culinary journey, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve offers an opportunity to go a bit deeper. Their “Hook-to-Cook” experience takes you out on the ocean to go deep-sea fishing for a half-day, where the concierge team will go with you on a boat to catch local fish like Mahi Mahi or other local fish. Later that evening, the chef will prepare you a dinner in the stunning La Cocina Gourmet Culinary Center, where you get to eat your fresh catch paired with wines. (book this experience with concierge.)

A second highlight at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is their Spa Botánico — a five-acre oasis featuring two treehouse treatment rooms, purification gardens, private treatment rooms, and more for discovery. First, you pass through the apothecary room where dried herbs like lavender and lemongrass fill the air with a relaxing fragrance. As you continue, it opens up to a view of the relaxing pool, and in the distance, the incredibly charming pineapple garden. It’s a must visit, and a treatment in the treehouse will relax any tired body.

Another highlight of Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve that cannot go unmentioned would indeed be the historic home on property, Su Casa. Now a renovated five-bedroom villa along the ocean, it was once the beloved home of Clara Livingston from 1928-1955. The amount of detail and history preserved in this private retreat is incredibly special and a cornerstone to the property.

Though there is plenty to do, whether it’s the spa, dining, or adventure activities with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment, there is one thing that cannot be overlooked: the suites. The Ritz-Carlton knows how to create a space that often makes it hard to leave because it’s that good. At Dorado Beach, each suite is designed to be airy and luxurious with in-room amenities like luxurious bathrooms and the kind of beds that will surely have you sleeping in. To highlight, the West Beach Plunge Reserve Suite opens up to a terrace with a plunge pool, just steps before the beach. The bathroom is outfitted with an oversized tub and an outdoor rain-shower that will have you taking a rinse outside everyday. With a well-thought out space, the suites are the perfect place to call home.

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve provides tailored service with touches like turndown service, cart rides along the expansive properties, and a concierge team that will perfect any vacation. It’s the ultimate island destination for those looking to sojourn in a lush escape.

PS — Are You Booking a Trip Soon? Use My Booking Checklist!

These are the sites I use most to book my own trips. Using the links below is a great way to support Bon Traveler’s travel journalism at no extra cost to you. If you need help organizing your itinerary, get my free travel itinerary template here.

1. Book Your Flights

Use Skyscanner to find the best flights. It searches 100s of airlines and websites across the globe to ensure you’re not missing out on any route options or deals.

2. Book Your Accommodations

Use for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.

3. Book Your Tours & Experiences

Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.

4. Book Your Car

Use Discover Cars or to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.

5. Don’t Forget Airport Lounge Access

Get a Priority Pass membership to gain access to 1,400+ VIP lounges and airport experiences worldwide. The Priority Pass app is the first thing I check when I have a layover. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and having a comfortable place to relax before and between flights makes air travel so much more enjoyable.

6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:
