Our days in town were spent slowly combing through picturesque walks, enjoying time along the Bay of Villefranche, and dining out. And while the village itself has lots to do, its easy connection to the rest of the South of France coastline makes it a wonderful jumping spot for exploring more.

What to Know Before You Visit Villefranche-sur-Mer

Getting to Villefranche-sur-Mer

If you’re planning to fly in, your best airport is Nice International. From there, I would hire a taxi or pre-book a private transfer (the best option in my opinion) to your accommodation. You can also train from the airport in 1 hour with one switch, though the 30 minutes transfer by car is more convenient.

If you’re already traveling around France, I would take the train to the main Villefranche-sur-Mer train station. From there, you can walk into town (note it can be steep).

For parking in the village, there are two main lots which we utilized with our rental car. Parking Wilson and the paid street parking on Rue de la Citadelle were the easiest for us to use. I always note that a rental car for a portion of your trip is super helpful for getting around the region.

Getting Around Town

The beauty of Villefranche-sur-Mer is that it is a very pedestrian-friendly village. Most of the town is pedestrian-only, with lots of stairs to get up and down, so be prepared. If you plan to do any day trips, you can consider using the train line or even the local bus line to Old Nice. I would recommend a car rental for any extended time as it’s the easiest for flexibility (I use Discover Cars for the best rental car rates and coverage).

When Is the Best Time to Visit Villefranche-sur-Mer?

The shoulder season months of May, September, and October are the best for good weather and fewer crowds. We were there in May, and the only downside was that it was not quite warm enough to enjoy swimming yet, so I’d opt for the early fall. Come summer, June to August, it is really busy with travelers coming in for the day and off cruise boats.

How Many Days to See Villefranche-sur-Mer?

You can explore the village in a day, but if you want to use it as a home base and fully enjoy the area, consider staying up to a week.

Where to Stay in Villefranche-sur-Mer

I went back and forth on whether or not to get a hotel or book a vacation rental for our time. Ultimately we ended up with a vacation rental, and while it was nice, it had some flaws and I wished we had booked into a hotel.

Villefranche Hotel Recommendations

There are only a few hotels in Villefranche-sur-Mer which book up quite fast, so try to plan ahead. These are the ones I would consider:

1. Welcome Hotel — This elevated, boutique hotel is right on the water’s edge in the old town. The rooms are clean and modest, and the restaurant downstairs has great energy. Most rooms have a wonderful view as well of the coast.
2. Hotel De La Darse — Just around the corner from the old town is the Darse Port (a 10-minute walk) and Hotel De La Darse is right there. This would be a quiet choice with good rooms with ocean views.
3. Hôtel le Provencal French Riviera — Up the hill is the most chic hotel option, the pink-hued building has lovely rooms with a view.

Things to Do in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Explore The Sights of Old Town

One of the best things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer if you’re visiting is just to stroll the old town. There is much to see by foot as you wind up and down the village. A few of my favorite streets were Rue de L’Eglise, which goes to the top and has incredible views back down. The pedestrian street of Rue du Poilu has all of your boutiques and many restaurants (you can take it to the beach). Don’t miss Rue Obscure, a medieval military street with a hidden passageway under the arches of town.

Two other iconic sights to see is the Saint Michel’s Church, which is the yellow bell tower you see pointing out from town. You can visit the church, and there is a lovely terrace just in front. Chapelle Saint-Pierre “Cocteau” is also a must-see for its facade and small interior home to many Jean Cocteau art pieces.

Have a Beach Day

Villefranche is home to two popular beaches, Plages des Marinieres and Plage de la Darse. Marinieres is my preferred beach. It’s just in front of the train station and is all pebbles. It’s quite easy to access by foot and perfect to set up for the day.

Enjoy the Weekly Farmer’s Market

Every Wednesday and Saturday, a small open-air farmer’s market is set up around Jardin François Binon. It’s a lovely atmosphere, small and intimate for a market. You can find most things from produce, cheese, rotisserie chicken, and other regional products.

For Family Travelers

If you’re visiting with kids, I’ll share a few tips for Villefranche (more can be found in my South of France with a toddler guide). The best park is the “Aire de Jeux” at Jardin François Binon — there are two sections divided by age group. The best pharmacy in town for supplies like diapers, wipes, and formula is Parapharmacie de l’Octroi, across from Jardin François Binon. There is a lovely carousel in front of the Welcome Hotel that is open on the weekends and days when cruise ships dock.

The Best Restaurants in Villefranche-sur-Mer

There are many restaurants to choose from in town and most will require a reservation ahead of time. A few of our favorites from the time were:

• La Caravelle, for traditional French cuisine
• BAKARO by Vini & Terroir, for pastries, coffee, and to-go sandwiches
• La Mère Germaine, for waterfront dining with fresh seafood
• Les Garçons, for French cuisine right in town
• Alma, for waterfront dining with Mediterranean and Nicoise cuisine (a fav)
• TOSCA, for Italian cuisine, was so easygoing and fun for everyone
• Le Mékong, for Vietnamese food (this was such a delight!)
• Olivula, for elevated cuisine on the waterfront
• Glacier Feracci Vielle ville, for our favorite gelato spot
