Where to Stay in Strasbourg, France: Best Areas and Hotels

Strasbourg is a charming city located along the Eastern border of France and Germany, about 2.5 hours by train from Paris. The city’s old-world charm makes it one of my favorite places France. After three visits, twice for the Christmas markets and once as a base for the nearby Alsace region, I’m sharing my guide to the best neighborhoods and hotels in Strasbourg to base yourself.

One of my favorite things about Strasbourg is that it’s wonderful any time of year. It takes on a different but equally lovely feel in each season. In the summer, you’ll find locals lounging in the sunshine and boats cruising the canals. In winter, the city transforms to earn its reputation as the capital of Christmas. You can wander one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world and admire the many festive storefronts decorated with Christmas cheer. 

It’s one of my favorite places to visit in France outside of Paris, as it has so much to offer. It’s one of those places that you can easily use as a base as well to discover the Alsace region. As someone who has visited France dozens of times (my family is from France), it’s well worth putting Strasbourg on your itinerary for either markets or a trip in general.

As you’re there, you’ll get a sense of Strasbourg’s dual identity wandering through the streets of Petite France. The Grande Île is the best choice for first-timers, serving as the historic heart of the city just steps away from the Strasbourg Cathedral. Place Klėber is the bustling city center, with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and major transportation hubs. And for those looking for a more local energy, Bourse-Krutenau is my top choice. For first-timers, the Grande Île will put you right at the historic center of the city. Petite France is arguably the most charming area, with its traditional homes and cobblestone streets. For a more local neighborhood, Bourse-Krutenau is the trendy university quarter known for coming alive at night.

Where Should I Stay in Strasbourg for the Christmas Markets?

The Grande Île and Place Kléber are the best areas to stay for the Strasbourg Christmas markets. There are several markets throughout the city, and these areas put you in the best location to explore them all. Staying central allows you to walk between the markets and duck back into your hotel for a break from the cold. Place Kléber is the city’s main square and is home to the Grand Sapin Christmas Tree. How Many Days in Strasbourg Are Enough?

2-3 nights in Strasbourg is ideal for any time of year. In summer, a relaxing long weekend soaking up the sun and seeing the sights is the perfect amount of time. For the winter markets, a few nights will give you enough time to visit the top markets. If you’re using Strasbourg as a base to explore the Alsace region, I’d recommend considering 5-7 nights, depending on how many towns you want to visit in the area.

Is Strasbourg a Walkable Town?

Absolutely, Strasbourg a very safe and walkable city. The main area of the Grande Île is compact and is either pedestrian-only or has very limited traffic. Most of the landmarks and sights, like the Strasbourg Cathedral and Petite France, are within a 10-15 minute walk from each other.

Should I Stay in Colmar or Strasbourg?

Strasbourg is a larger city in comparison to Colmar, with more variety in terms of dining, shopping, and nightlife. Its central train station makes it the ideal base for the surrounding Alsace area. Colmar is much smaller and more intimate, ideal for those who want a quiet stay in the heart of wine country. Since Colmar is only a short 30-minute train ride, I’d recommend staying in Strasbourg and adding a day to your itinerary to visit Colmar. Check out my Colmar Christmas market guide for more.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Strasbourg?

If you’re coming for the Christmas Markets, I recommend coming in late November or early December, when they first open for the season, and there are fewer crowds.

Travel Tip: The Christmas Markets are the most popular time of year, so be sure to book your accommodations well in advance and confirm the market dates.

For a warmer weather trip, May and June are ideal as the flowers are in full bloom and the temperatures are still milder, as it can get quite hot in July and August. For wine lovers, the autumn months of September and October are beautiful and offer nice weather and relaxed vibes.

Grande-Île & Place Kléber: Best Area for First-Timers and Christmas Markets

The Grand Île is the historic center of Strasbourg and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is a small island encircled by the River Ill. I like staying here as it puts you in the center of the city, within a short walk of shopping, restaurants, and sites like the Strasbourg Cathedral and the Palais Rohan.

On the island, you’ll find both the charming Petite France area within its bounds, with its traditional timbered German-style homes, and the central Place Kléber, the city’s largest and most famous square. It’s a shopping and social hub year-round, and comes alive in the winter season with the markets and iconic Grand Sapin Christmas Tree. For this guide, the Grande-Île area I’m sharing about is the island area outside of Petite France and closer to Place Kléber.

Staying in the Grand Île or near Place Kléber puts you right in the center of the action. It’s the perfect way to experience the best of the city.

Cons of Staying in Grand Île and Place Kléber

While the Grand Île and Place Kléber are convenient and central, staying in the heart of a major tourist destination has some trade-offs. 

• Place Kléber is busy almost any time of day.
• If you’re renting a car, the Grand Île is not car-friendly. Large parts of the island are pedestrian-only, and parking is both scarce and expensive. 
• Because of the prime location, you can expect to pay a bit more for hotels, cafes, and restaurants.
• During peak season, many areas feel quite touristy.

Petite France: Best Charming Stay in Strasbourg

Petite France is the most picturesque corner of Strasbourg. Wandering through the narrow cobblestone alleys and timber-framed houses feels like stepping into a postcard. It was historically the quarter where many of the city’s craftsmen lived, and is now a peaceful, pedestrian-friendly area sitting next to the canal. It’s one of my favorite parts of Strasbourg’s Old Town.

You’ll find remnants of the city’s medieval past in historic landmarks like the iconic Maison des Tanneurs craftsman-style home from 1572 (now an Alsatian restaurant) and the Ponts Couverts bridges. You’re within a 10-minute walk of most of the rest of Strasbourg as well.

Pros of Staying in Petite France

Staying in Petite France is the best choice for travelers who prioritize charm and atmosphere over modern conveniences. You’ll wake up in the most beautiful part of Strasbourg, and enjoy more quiet compared to the busier areas near the Strasbourg Cathedral and Place Kleber. 

• This is arguably the most picturesque area in the city, and staying here allows you to enjoy it before and after the crowds.
• The area is almost entirely pedestrian-only and more quiet than other areas
• The hotels here are often smaller and family-run, and housed in restored historic buildings, offering a more unique stay

Cons of Staying in Petite France

The storybook charm that draws many to the area comes with some challenges that might not suit every traveler. 

• Logistically, you’re in a maze of narrow cobblestone streets leading to canals, so travelers with wheelchairs or strollers may find navigating this area more challenging.
• During the day, the streets can get more congested with tourists
• There is little to no nightlife in the area, so after dark, the area can feel a bit like a ghost town (this may be a “pro” for some travelers!)

Bourse-Krutenau: The Local Neighborhood Near Everything

Bourse-Krutenau is the bohemian heart of Strasbourg. It was once a neighborhood of craftsmen and fishermen and has evolved into a vibrant and authentic University district. Today, you’ll find quirky independent bookshops, vintage stores, and local bakeries. It’s a great place to get a break from the more touristy areas.

It’s also the destination for nightlife in the city, given the proximity to the University of Strasbourg. This area feels more local, but is still within a short walk to the sights of the Grande Île.

Pros of Staying in Bourse-Krutenau

Staying in Bourse-Krutenau is the best choice for travelers who prefer to experience the local side of Strasbourg. 

• This is the culinary capital of the city for locals, with traditional Alsatian restaurants mixed with more modern spots.
• Bourse-Krutenau is a quieter local neighborhood, within a short walk to the hotspots in the Grande Ile. 
• Hotels and vacation rentals are generally more spacious and affordable

Cons of Staying in Bourse-Krutenau

Bourse-Krutenau is one of the cooler neighborhoods in Strasbourg, but there are a few quirks to be aware of:

• You’ll be in the heart of the university area, which means there is more nightlife and noise into the early morning hours.
• The area feels more urban and lacks historic the charm of the Petite France.
• You’ll be walking a bit more to visit some of the sights. Only about 10 minutes to the Cathedral, but it can be 20-25 minutes to Petite France.

Gare-Tribunal (Train Station): Best Option for Travel Convenience

The Gare-Tribunal district is the main connection point to the city. Only a short walk into the historic center, it’s the ideal location for travelers who are using Strasbourg as a base to explore the surrounding areas. You’ll find it has more of a metropolitan vibe than the fairytale Grande Île.

The Tribunal area is more residential than the other neighborhoods I’ve recommended, which can offer a quieter base. I recommend staying in this area for travelers who prefer easy access to the train station and a quieter residential neighborhood experience.

Pros of Staying in Gare-Tribunal

Staying in the Gare-Tribunal area is all about convenience. 

• You’ll have easy access to Gare Centrale train station.
• This is the most car-friendly area of the city. If you are renting a car, Gare-Tribunal is the best area to stay, with easier driving and parking. 
• You’re still within a short walk to the Petite France district, and have access to transit into the city center.

Cons of Staying in Gare-Tribunal

The Gare-Tribunal area is logistically convenient for travelers who want to be connected to transit or prefer to rent a car. However, it lacks the fairytale charm that Strasbourg is known for. 

• The area immediately near the Gare Centrale station can be a bit rough around the edges.
• It feels more like an urban European city than a quaint Alsatian town. 
• The Tribunal sector is a business hub, so after commuter hours, this area can feel a bit empty.

Where to Stay if You Have a Car in Strasbourg

Driving in the Grand Île can be a logistical headache, as much of the island is a pedestrian-only zone. Navigating the narrow, one-way cobblestone streets is frustrating enough, but finding a parking spot is nearly impossible. In short, I really wouldn’t recommend it unless your hotel can prearrange parking for you.

If you are renting a car and self-driving, I recommend basing yourself on the outer edge of the Grand Île or just across the bridge in either the Bourse-Krutenau or Gare-Tribunal districts. There are a few larger public parking garages here. I’ve included some great options below that offer parking.
