With rugged cliffs, terraced hills, and ancient olive groves, the landscape of Sifnos is deeply intertwined with its food. This is the Cycladic island for those who love to eat, home to a dozen-plus great restaurants. And with so much choice, I’m breaking down exactly where to eat on the iconic foodie island, from seaside tavernas to tucked-away village restaurants.

I remember when I first looked at visiting Sifnos for our time in the Cyclades. I was drawn to the stories I heard about its restaurant scene, a sort of outlier for the region that doesn’t always get the highest marks for dining. Friends raved, the photos were tempting, and so I planned for our family to spend 8 full days on the island. My itinerary? Completely centered around Sifnos’ very best restaurants. Each day, a beach and a taverna, and by night, a long and slow dinner in villages with views of the Aegean.

Why is Sifnos so known for this? The soil is rich in clay, which has led to a strong tradition of pottery on the island. These ceramics became a vessel for some of the best dishes, slow-cooked in terracotta pots for hours. There’s an abundance of fresh, delicious ingredients on the island, too. All of this combines for some of the most incredible food I’ve ever tasted.

Sifnos is one of my favorite European islands, and beyond the food, I loved the laid-back feel. Not a party scene; instead, Sifnos feels relaxed, unhurried, and perfect to slowly explore. That being said, I recommend booking well ahead for restaurants on Sifnos. Especially at the famous Cantina, which books out months in advance.

After returning from our 8 days exploring this small island, I can say this is the spot to go to for food. In this guide, I’m outlining the very best restaurants on Sifnos — the places to eat and well worth planning your time around.

Short on Time? Here Are My Top Picks for the Best Hotels and Things to Do in Sifnos:

For four nights or more, I recommend splitting your stay between Platis Gialos or Faros and Artemonas or Apollonia. With fewer nights, I’d choose one base in the center or south of the island.

  1. Platis Gialos and Faros, best for beachfront stays and families
Hotels: Verina Terra Hotel, Enalion Suites, Nos Hotel & Villas
Airbnbs: Villa Glaros House (Where I Stayed), Sifnos Beachfront Home, Ammos 2
  2. Artemonas, best for a central location for traditional charm
Hotels: Verina Astra Hotel, Petali Village Hotel
Airbnbs: Aggelis Villa Sifnos (Where I Stayed), Aglaia’s Home, Hillside House

Hotels: Stamna Sifnos, Nival Boutique Hotel, Gerofinikas Boutique Hotel
Airbnbs: Kallisti Boutique Home, DeuxSiècles Rooftop Home, #HH05 Sunset House
  4. Cheronissos, best location for unplugged relaxation
Airbnbs: Psarona Hospitality Big 1 Br (My Top Pick), Ethereal House, Onar Sifnos
  5. Vathi, best for a low-key beach
Hotels: Elies Resort, Eutopia Suites, Aerides Boutique Rooms
Airbnbs: Xenia Beachhouse, Sea-fnos Beach House, Beach Studio

The Best Restaurants in Sifnos, Greece

Cantina

Cantina is one of the hardest reservations to get on the island. And, also one of the restaurants I was most looking forward to visiting on my trip. Cantina is a restaurant from Chef Giorgos Samoilis, who’s known as the chef of modern Greek food. The approach is hyper-local, seasonal, and the restaurant is even zero waste.

Since this reservation is hard to get (beyond being incredibly well-known, the restaurant is tiny!), I’d recommend making this reservation first if you’re interested in visiting. I booked the 7 PM seating to catch the end of the day’s light. It was a stunning ambiance to sample some of Sifnos’ incredible ingredients.

  • How to Reserve: You can reserve a table at Cantina by contacting them via WhatsApp. The number is listed on the Cantina website.
  • Location: Cantina is down a stone staircase of about 100 steps in a little cove. The restaurant is near the village of Kastro, on the eastern coast of the island.
  • Dishes to Remember: Cantina has a set course menu that’s usually about 7 to 8 dishes. The dishes served regularly change with the season, too. So, I’d let yourself be surprised by what the talented team cooks up, but expect lots of wood-fired dishes and fresh local cheese intertwined through the courses.

Pelicanos

A sister restaurant to Cantina, Pelicanos is also owned by Giorgos Samoilis. On the sands of Faro Beach, Pelicanos is a more casual restaurant. Just like Cantina, I’d say it’s also a must-visit, and it was one of our top three meals on the island. Since it’s on the beach, it’s an amazing spot for a delicious lunch and then a swim.

  • How to Reserve: Reservations for Pelicanos can be made by sending a message to the restaurant via WhatsApp. The number is on the restaurant website.
  • Location: Pelicanos is on Faros Beach, right on the water.
  • Dishes to Remember: I loved the butterflied and charcoal-grilled mackerel! Simple ingredients done beautifully, and I’d highly recommend enjoying some of the raw fish and don’t miss the house-made chips.

Bostani Bar & Restaurant at Verina Astra

Sitting within the Verina Astra Hotel, Bostani Bar & Restaurant is worth a visit on its own. Tables have incredible views of the Aegean, and the food is simple yet perfectly prepared. I’d recommend timing your visit for sunset and requesting a table closer to the edge to maximize the beautiful views.

  • How to Reserve: Bookings for Bostani can be made either through Resy online, by phone, or by email.
  • Location: Bostani Bar & Restaurant is in Poulati, Sifnos, within the Verina Astra Hotel.
  • Dishes to Remember: I absolutely loved Bostani’s eggplant, with a super flavorful parsley pesto and feta alongside their take on cacio e pepe with squid.

Omega3

This fish and wine bar is overlooking the Aegean, with outstanding views to match the outstanding food. Serving modern small plates with a focus on seafood, yet in a laid-back setting. Omega3 was one of the first modern restaurants on the island to open, and still to today, draws a crowd.

  • How to Reserve: Since the restaurant is so tiny, reservations are highly recommended for Omega3. You can make advance reservations on the Omega3 website.
  • Location: Omega3 is located on Platys Gialos, Sifnos.
  • Dishes to Remember: We loved how fresh the seafood and fish were at Omega3, and the fish carpaccio was a highlight for us.

Tsikali

Tsikali is a laid-back, traditional Greek restaurant right on Vathi Beach. This family-run taverna serves up classic dishes, many of which highlight Sifnos’ delicious ingredients. This is also a family-friendly, more casual place to have a meal (great for a bite after the morning on the beach!).

  • How to Reserve: Tsikali doesn’t accept reservations, only walk-ins.
  • Location: On Vathi Beach, on the southern coast of Sifnos.
  • Dishes to Remember: The perfect, fresh Greek salad, which is also an ideal dish for a beachside lunch and their famous moussaka.

Loggia Wine Bar

A perfect place to have a glass of wine and dinner, while overlooking the Aegean. Loggia is an open-air wine bar with a relaxed feel and a great wine list. It’s such an idyllic setting for sunset, and not surprisingly, it gets busy in the evenings.

  • How to Reserve: Reservations are required if you want to have dinner at Loggia. You can make a reservation online, and they often list details on their Instagram. If you’re just looking for a quick glass of wine, you can often sit on the steps, but seating isn’t guaranteed.
  • Location: Loggia Wine Bar is in Kastro, on the eastern coast of Sifnos.
  • Dishes to Remember: The wine here is incredible, and as far as food goes, everything we had was delicious. I loved their bread, especially alongside the tarama dip made from fish roe.

Restaurant Chrisopigi-Lembesis

This might have been our favorite beachside taverna on Sifnos. We couldn’t believe how delicious the food was! Tables are right on the beach, so you can gaze out at the emerald waters as you dine. Restaurant Chrisopigi-Lembesis is family-run and serves traditional specialities like mastelo, slow-baked lamb or goat in a clay pot, freshly grilled fish, and more.

  • How to Reserve: Restaurant Chrisopigi-Lembesis accepts walk-ins, and reservations aren’t strictly required (we didn’t have one), but you can contact the restaurant by phone to request.
  • Location: This taverna is on Apokofto Beach, in Sifnos.
  • Dishes to Remember: The chickpea stew, fresh tomato salad, and meatballs.

Maiòlica Sifnos

Right on the beach near Omega3, Maiòlica is another great lunch option on Platys Gialos. Also overlooking the water, the restaurant serves refined Greek fish and vegetable dishes that lean more creative and modern, rather than traditional. The atmosphere is still casual, and the beach views are perfect. Reservations are recommended, especially in the summer months.

  • How to Reserve: You can reserve a table at Maiòlica on the restaurant’s website or through Resy.
  • Location: Maiòlica is located on Platys Gialos, Sifnos
  • Dishes to Remember: We loved the fresh tomato and watermelon salad. The fish dishes we tried were incredible, too (like the sea bass carpaccio).

Kafeneio Drakakis

We loved dining at Kafeneio Drakakis on Sifnos, in the town of Apollonia. With a chalkboard menu and lovely terrace, it’s a great spot for both traditional and modern Greek dishes. Drakakis has been running for almost 140 years. Lively and warm, it’s a spot to spend an evening at after exploring the village.

  • How to Reserve: The restaurant doesn’t take reservations, so I’d expect to wait a bit for a table at busy times.
  • Location: In Apollonia, Sifnos
  • Dishes to Remember: We can’t stop thinking about the stacked tomatoes and fried local cheese dish at Kafeneio Drakakis.

NŌS The Restaurant

NŌS The Restaurant is a hotel restaurant in NŌS Hotels & Villas. Local ingredients and cooking techniques are the star at this luxurious, celebrated restaurant, highlighting some of the best that Sifnos has to offer. The atmosphere is peaceful, elegant, and stunning, with sweeping views over the Aegean. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, if you appreciate excellent food, this is a great place to add to your list. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner.

  • How to Reserve: Reservations are recommended for NŌS, especially in the peak of the summer. You can reserve a table by contacting the restaurant by phone or email.
  • Location: NŌS The Restaurant is located within NŌS Hotels & Villas, in Faros.
  • Dishes to Remember: I loved the courgette and feta croquettes, and the grilled shrimp in garlic were also exceptional.

Cafe Mosaic

This charming restaurant is tucked away on the small streets of Artemonas. They serve delicious, elegant Greek dishes as small plates for sharing. We had a great family dinner here, with delicious food! Cafe Mosaic is usually busy, so if you’re visiting at a busy time, consider stopping by a bit earlier in the evening or know you might need to wait.

  • How to Reserve: Cafe Mosaic doesn’t accept reservations, with tables available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Location: In Artemonas, just a short distance from Apollonia.
  • Dishes to Remember: I absolutely loved the fried local cheese with jam. The cheeses on Sifnos are outstanding, and this dish highlighted that beautifully.

Cheronissos Fish Taverna Sifnos

Think simple and fresh food, in a more secluded part of Sifnos. Cheronissos Fish Taverna is known for delicious fish and seafood, alongside traditional dishes, as well. In a quieter area than southern Sifnos, I’d recommend visiting if you’re looking for something a bit more tranquil. Since you’re right by the beach, it’s a great spot to go for a swim, then stop at the taverna for lunch.

  • How to Reserve: Cheronissos Fish Taverna doesn’t take reservations, so you’ll need to walk in to try to get a table.
  • Location: On the northern side of Sifnos in Cheronissos, about a 30-minute drive from Apollonia.
  • Dishes to Remember: Greek classics are definitely the star here, like saganaki (fried cheese), spanakopita (spinach pie), and fresh seafood.

Veniou Bakery

This is a delicious traditional bakery in Sifnos, in the town of Artemonas. Veniou Bakery is family-run, selling bread, pastries, cookies, and more, and is a wonderful spot to grab a few small sweets to sample Cycladic baking.

  • How to Reserve: No reservations are needed at Veniou Bakery.
  • Location: Located in Artemonas, just a short distance from Apollonia.
  • Dishes to Remember: Veniou is well-known for amygdalota, almond sweets flavored with rosewater.

Mamma Mia

A family-run Italian restaurant, Mamma Mia offers fresh pasta, pizzas, and vegetable dishes. Open-air and overlooking the sea, this is a staple spot in Apollonia whether for lunch or dinner. Known for warm, welcoming service, Mamma Mia also has changing daily specials in addition to their regular menu.

  • How to Reserve: Reservations are recommended, especially in the busy summer season, and can be made by contacting Mamma Mia by phone.
  • Location: Mamma Mia is located in Apollonia, and also has a second location on Platis Gialos.
  • Dishes to Remember: Everything here looked fabulous, but I loved the trofie pasta with pesto.

Gerontopoulos

Gerontopoulos is a historic pastry shop on Sifnos, and has been operating since 1950. Stop here for a coffee and traditional Sifnan pastry, or for lunch. There’s a charming patio where you can sit outside, and they also have a shop where you can purchase a few items to go (perfect for souvenirs).

  • How to Reserve: No reservations are needed to visit Gerontopoulos.
  • Location: Gerontopoulos is located in Apollonia, Sifnos.
  • Dishes to Remember: I’d recommend trying the galaktoboureko, with a creamy, custardy interior and crispy phyllo pastry top.

Betty’s Bakery Sifnos

If you’re looking for a coffee spot during the day in Faros, I couldn’t recommend Betty’s more. They serve delicious coffee, fresh juices, and pastries and baked goods. It’s perfect for breakfast or anytime you need to quickly refuel in the middle of the day. Note that there isn’t any seating, and this is more of a grab-and-go spot.

  • How to Reserve: As a walk-in cafe, reservations aren’t needed for Betty’s.
  • Location: Betty’s is located in the village of Faros, in Sifnos.
  • Dishes to Remember: A coffee and a piece of lemon cake are the perfect mid-afternoon snack.

What to Know about Dining in Sifnos

Why is Sifnos known as A Foodie Destination?

If you love to travel and love good food, Sifnos needs to be on your list. One of the Greek islands (specifically, part of the Greek Cyclades), Sifnos is known as the birthplace of Greek gastronomy, with traditional food and innovative cuisine. The island owes its reputation in big part to Sifnos cook Nicholas Tselementes who wrote Greek Cookery in 1910, an iconic book on Greek gastronomy. With strong local gastronomic traditions and an abundance of delicious ingredients, the island has a well-earned reputation as a premier foodie destination.

How far in advance do I need to make restaurant reservations in Sifnos?

It depends on the restaurant, but I’d recommend a few weeks in advance for Sifnos’ most popular spots (or even a couple of months in advance for a restaurant like Cantina, especially during the summer). Local tavernas that are less competitive can be booked just a few days in advance.
