With summer vacations around the corner, one of the frequent questions is which camera to purchase. I want to share my picks for the best Sony cameras for beginner photographers. I’ve been a user of Sony for years now and their line of cameras is a great place to start.

Best Sony Cameras for Beginner Photographers

Sony’s mirrorless system is the perfect fit for those who are just starting to get into photography. If you’ve read the post on what’s in my camera bag, then you’ll know that I shoot exclusively on Sony’s range. Their glass is incredible, the tech is some of the best in cameras, and it’s lightweight. I have the Sony A7RIII which can run high, however, they have incredible cameras down range if you’re just starting out or looking to up your photography.

When I travel, I always keep my gear to a minimum — I do not want to be lugging around a heavy set. With the compact systems, Sony has been able to redefine the space with cameras that are user-friendly. Here’s a look at the best Sony compact and mirrorless cameras to consider:

Best Value: Sony A6000

If there is one model that nails price and value, it’s the A6000. This camera gives you access to Sony’s interchangeable lenses range, which means you can switch them out easily. The resolution is strong, providing clear images. I love the size — it’s actually the camera I’m currently looking to get as one to throw in my purse on the go.

Type: Mirrorless
Sensor: APS-C
Megapixels: 24.3MP
User Level: Beginner I
Price: $598 on Amazon. (body + lens)

Best Travel Camera: Sony A6500

This is Sony’s main camera for their compact system cameras with interchangeable lenses. Even though it is compact, it has incredible tech behind it. With sensor-shift image stabilization (important for on the go and low light) and a high-res viewfinder, the camera is sharp. It’s the camera to go for if you’re looking to be under $1000 and have a great mirrorless setup where you can switch out lenses.

Type: Mirrorless
Sensor: APS-C
Megapixels: 24.2MP
User Level: Frequent User
Price: $1098 on Amazon. (body Only)

Best Pocket Camera: Sony RX100 IV

If you’re really looking for a camera to slip into your pocket, then the RX100 IV is it. This small, compact (not a mirrorless setup), has a great sensor that provides clear imagery. It is on the pricier side for a compact camera but in return, you get a large sensor.

Type: Compact
Lens: 24-70mm
Sensor: 1 in type
Megapixels: 20.1MP
User Level: Frequent User
Price: $898 on Amazon.

Sensor: 1/2.3 in type
Megapixels: 18.2MP
