When it comes to Carlsbad, California, there is no better place to spend a weekend away in Southern California. This all-ages-friendly destination packs a seriously fun must-see list, which I have to share all about after our weekend there.
This was my first time in Carlsbad in my later adult years after visiting several times growing up. I have several family ties here and have even spent a weekend camping there in my college years. But this visit to Carlsbad was much different—I was there to discover all the best things to do, kick back at a resort, and have a memorable trip with my family—the kind of weekend vacation I always crave in California.

As someone who travels frequently with my toddler, I knew our time in Carlsbad would have the perfect blend of experiences. I’m all for things that my daughter will love, plus us parents too. Carlsbad has that ultimate, laid-back California vibe, which makes it even easier to travel with kids. And I think you’ll be surprised by how much this North San Diego County beach town has to offer.
Carlsbad gets a lot of notoriety during the spring months when the famous Flower Fields of ranunculus are in full bloom. But let me tell you, this is somewhere you could visit all year round. Warmer temps mean great beach days whether or not you’re in the water. The Carlsbad Village is packed with memorable restaurants, shops, and events. Plus, there are incredible destination resorts to seal the deal.

What to Know Before Visiting Carlsbad
Is Carlsbad Closer to San Diego or Los Angeles?
A frequently asked question is where is Carlsbad? Well, it’s about 35 miles north of San Diego which is why it is so convenient to fly into San Diego Airport (peep those cheap tickets on Southwest!). It’s about 87 miles from Los Angeles, so if you’re on a Southern California trip, I would easily add Carlsbad as part of your time visiting.
Do I Need a Car to Visit Carlsbad?
I would say a car is super helpful for visiting Carlsbad and will give you the most freedom to explore as you want to.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit?
Spring has a lot going on for events like the Flower Fields and strawberry picking. But honestly, you can’t go wrong any time of the year as there are always events happening, beaches to enjoy, and more.
Where to Stay in Carlsbad, California
Omni La Costa Resort & Spa
Set on a championship golf course in North County, about 10 minutes from the beach, is the destination hotel of Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. When I say this resort has it all, I mean it and for all ages, too. The Mission-style resort sits on 400 acres, featuring several restaurants, pools, a spa, two golf courses, shops, and even a kid center. It’s the kind of place where you can choose your adventure.
The suites and rooms are spread out across Omni La Costa, each in their section of the property. All the action is in the center of the resort. The main restaurant, Vue, has sweeping views over the golf course and the adult pool with infinity hot tubs. You’ll find several gift shops with everything you need and a well-thought-out marketplace for to-go food, snacks, and hot food.
The main pool area is split across a few sections, a kid-specific pool with a walk-in section, several water slides, and a larger main pool. But don’t worry, if you’re on the other side of the property, there are several other pools there too. It’s incredible — you’re never more than a 2-minute walk to a pool here which is such a win whether you’re with kids or not.
The suites are spacious and renovated in recent years. Some have views depending on where you’re at on the property. The in-room amenities like the coffee machine, soaking tubs, and mini refrigerator were all highlights. Plus, you can order food from Vue at any time.
Where to Eat in Carlsbad, California
GONZO! Ramen
All things Japanese, GONZO! was such a fun meal for an authentic bowl of ramen. The eclectic space with odes to rock & roll was well appreciated. Don’t miss their miso ramen, and be sure to try the gyoza.
Campfire
One of the highlights of our time in Carlsbad was the memorable meal at Campfire. Reservations are needed at this chic, “camp-inspired” restaurant that is centered around wood-fired cooking. Order any of their seasonal vegetable dishes, and pair along with the roast chicken. And most certainly order the s’mores that you get to cook tableside.
Lola 55
This Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant served one of the tastiest meals. Freshly made tortillas are the base of Lola 55‘s savory tacos, each so good like the fish and carnitas. The space is airy and fun, and I loved that the atmosphere felt light-hearted. I will also note this is such an affordable option for an incredibly delicious meal that transports.
Vue
Set at Omni La Costa, the elevated restaurant has a stunning terrace to enjoy several meals at. Breakfast at Vue has all the classics you could hope for, with French toast to omelets. But what was my favorite meal was a late lunch set with a delicious steak salad.
Revolution Roasters
In Carlsbad Village, Revolution Roasters was the spot for breakfast and coffee. Their pastry case was packed with yummy treats like monkey bread and famous seasonal pop tarts. The coffee is super good, and there is an entire back patio to enjoy as well.
Windmill Food Hall
Set in the iconic Windmill building, Windmill Food Hall is a one-stop shop for all things food. You’ll find several food stands inside. We had lunch at Thai Style, which was so good.
Better Buzz Coffee
For your caffeine needs, Better Buzz Coffee is one of our favorite coffee shops in town. The small-batch coffee roasters have classic coffee drinks, plus a menu of specialty drinks.
Things to Do in Carlsbad, California
Explore the Carlsbad Beaches
Seven miles of beaches in Carlsbad provides several opportunities to enjoy time on the Pacific Coast. The stretch between Turnarounds Beach to Terramar Beach was some of the most beautiful, with sea cliffs and stunning ocean views. One afternoon was spent at Tamarack Surf Beach, which is a good spot for a stroll and surf, but note that it can have steep edges down to the water. With our daughter, we loved Carlsbad State Beach and accessed it at the north end at Cypress Avenue Beach Access.
Visit Carlsbad Village
The Village is essentially the downtown part of Carlsbad, where several blocks feature great shops, restaurants, and a few sights to see. You’ll even find murals across town, like the Sleeping Tiger by Michael Summers on the Witch Creek Winery Building. If you’re visiting on a Wednesday, there’s a weekly farmer’s market set up, a popular thing to do in the afternoon.
Stroll Leo Carillo Historic Park
Leo Carrillo Historic Park is lovely to visit if you want to visit a historic park, set with stunning landscapes. The park features restored adobe buildings, lush gardens, and intriguing exhibits about the life of actor and conservationist Leo Carrillo. It’s a perfect spot for a stroll, a picnic, or simply soaking in the serene surroundings.
Spend an Afternoon at Legoland
While there are many attractions in Carlsbad, one of the most famous is Legoland, and I have to say I enjoyed it myself, too. We took our daughter for the morning, loved getting to ride a few of the rides (several for all ages), and explored some of the build-it-yourself sections, too. You could spend a full day here or even do a half-day to enjoy. I’d recommend getting tickets in advance and visiting mid-week for fewer crowds.
