I can find endless reasons to visit Carmel-by-the-Sea, one of my top places to visit as a Northern California local. And as someone who has visited dozens of times on a couple’s getaway, with my toddler in tow, solo, and even to host a retreat, I’ve stayed at many of the hotels in Carmel. So I’ve put together a guide on where to stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea, giving you my favorites.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of our go-tos for a guaranteed relaxed coastal stay. It doesn’t hurt that it’s beyond charming with its storybook architecture and whimsical hidden passageways and courtyards. Paired with being right on the Monterey coast, where you can stroll beaches and coves, go tidepooling, and see sea otters and whales, what more could you want for a weekend trip?

Over the last few years, Carmel has changed, and truthfully, it feels even cooler than the place I grew up going as a teenager for family spring break. It’s become this enclave of artisan shops, Michelin-starred dining, and a handful of very chic hotels that have opened. It’s a storied city with lots of history, and somewhere worth adding to any California road trip.

So I’ve pulled together the very best of my trips, the places I have loved and have stayed multiple times, or have scouted. I’m giving you my honest take, plus a handful of Airbnb properties in Carmel, because they’re some real gems. Read on for my complete guide on where to stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

What to Expect of Accommodations in Carmel-by-the-Sea

One thing I love to share about hotels in Carmel is just exactly what to expect. Since these are older properties, often many of the downtown properties are renovated motels and hotels. You’ll see that many of the boutique properties have outward-facing doors opening onto a courtyard — this might matter if you’d like a room with a window and privacy. But on the other hand, these courtyard hotels have a lot of charm and great lounge spaces to make up for it. Pools are limited, and only a handful of hotels have amenities like spas and on-site restaurants, all worth considering depending on what you need.

Getting to Carmel-by-the-Sea

Driving

From San Francisco, the drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea is about 2 hours. From Sacramento, it’s 3 hours. Carmel-by-the-Sea makes for a wonderful pitstop if you’re doing a Highway 1 road trip as well, between Big Sur and San Francisco.

Flying

The closest airport to Carmel-by-the-Sea is the Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), and about a 15-minute drive into the downtown village area. It does have limited flights, so if you’re coming from further, you could consider flying into San Francisco International Airport (SFO), 2 hours away, or San Jose International Airport (SJC), about 1 hour away.

Getting Around Carmel-by-the-Sea

The downtown area is walkable, so if your hotel is on or just off Ocean Avenue, you can get around on foot. A lot of the hotels include free bikes as well, which is wonderful for putting around and getting down to the beaches. For longer distances, you’ll need to call an Uber or rent a car.

Is it Better to stay in Monterey or Carmel-by-the-Sea?

The difference between Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea is very great; they have entirely different feels to them. Carmel-by-the-Sea is much more romantic, with historic charm and atmosphere that give it almost a fairy-tale feel. Monterey feels more geared towards attractions like the wharf, Cannery Row, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

What is the Best Area of Carmel-by-the-Sea to Stay In?

Somewhere near the downtown village is always preferred. You’re right in the heart of it all, and you can walk or bike to the shops and down to the beach if you’d like. The only other consideration would be to stay in Carmel Valley, a beautiful wine region just 15 minutes inland that has a few stellar hotels, which I’ll talk about further below.

Best Time to Visit and Weather in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel’s weather on a whole is almost always in the mid-60s to 70s and pretty mild. I’ve been there in January and have laid out on the beach, and I’ve seen some heavy fog in the summer months. Here’s what to expect:

  • Winter — Surprisingly sunny. Highs range from 57–75 °F (14–24 °C), and the crowds are low.
  • Spring — A great time to visit. The weather warms up, and everything is in bloom. Expect the biggest crowds during the Pebble Beach Festival week. Temperatures gradually climb from the 60s into the high 70s.
  • Summer — Often the most foggy time to visit, the days usually will clear for a few hours in the afternoon.
  • Fall — Still warm enough to explore and often more sunny days than summer!

Best Areas & Neighborhoods in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel beach with Pebble Beach in the distance

Carmel-by-the-Sea is quite compact, and you’re never be more than a 10-minute drive from anything. After a dozen-plus trips, I always suggest staying in Downtown near Ocean Avenue for a first visit, so you can walk to restaurants, bars, and shops. But the other neighborhoods are also lovely, depending on what kind of trip you’re planning.

Downtown / Ocean Avenue

The main downtown area of Carmel is really centered around Ocean Avenue, between the blocks of 5th and 8th Avenue, and from Monte Verde Street to Junipero Street. This is where the majority of the restaurants and shops are, with many galleries here. You’ll find hotels here like my favorite Le Petit Pali on 8th, and its sister property, Le Petit Pali on Ocean Avenue, to upscale hotels like L’Auberge.

Carmel Point

The Carmel Point neighborhood is an exclusive, very high-end part of Carmel that sits out on the point and near Carmel Beach. It’s very residential, about a 20-minute walk back up into the downtown area. However, you’re just a 5-minute walk to the beach — it’s splendidly quiet here in a good way. The hotel in this neighborhood is the chic adults-only Villa Mara, and then the newer Carmel Beach Hotel.

Golden Rectangle

The Golden Rectangle is more of an informal neighborhood area just off the downtown, before reaching the beach area. The main hotel that would be in this area is La Playa.

Carmel Valley

Inland from Carmel is a prestigious wine region and town called Carmel Valley, which is only 15 minutes inland. I absolutely adore the Carmel Valley Ranch hotel here, having stayed a handful of times. You’re close to the village, so it’s easy to drive in, and you can stay out in nature in the countryside.

The Best Hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea

I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea over the years, and these are the ones I’d actually recommend. Each one has a different vibe, so it really comes down to what kind of trip you’re after.

Le Petit Pali on 8th Avenue

Vibe: A well-designed hotel, with a European bed-and-breakfast charm
Budget: $$ (boutique luxury)
Best For: Couples, a friend’s getaway, family, or solo travelers

I recently had the chance to stay at Le Petit Pali on 8th Avenue (there’s a second Petit Pali on Ocean), and I just adored my stay here. It took over a previous hotel, just a few blocks off Ocean Avenue, so walking distance to everything. The Petit Pali group does a phenomenal job with design, with no detail overlooked from the check-in process, complete with a glass of wine to special amenities in the room like yoga mats and even a hot water pad you can use.

Le Petit Pali on 8th is a great stay, it has 24 rooms, all of which face an inner courtyard and include complimentary bikes. There are multiple lounge spaces, like the outdoor bistro tables, lounge chairs, and a stunning indoor room centered on a fireplace. The one perk I loved about staying was the included breakfast, which had all the bells and whistles like local pastries, fresh juice, and eggs to order.

Villa Mara

Vibe: Elegant, chic hotel, tucked away in a quiet neighborhood
Budget: $$$
Best For: Couples or friends, *adults only

One of the most sought-after hotels in Carmel, tucked away in the high-end Carmel Point neighborhood, is Villa Mara, the only Michelin-keyed hotel in town. It’s an adults-only, luxury hotel with 16 rooms. It’s a very nondescript property, tucked back on a street, just two blocks from the ocean. The design here is phenomenal, it strikes a great balance between elevated chic, yet that laid-back California feel I love about Carmel.

Villa Mara also has Linus Bikes on hand for guests to use around town, plus several lounge spaces to enjoy on the property. Another highlight is the included breakfast set in the bar area, around a fireplace. It’s one of those properties that’s intimate and quiet.

La Playa Carmel

Vibe: Legendary hotel with a resort feel
Budget
: $$$
Best For:
All

One of the most premier and storied properties in Carmel, La Playa is the largest hotel in the village area with 75 rooms and suites. Just a few years ago, the hotel received a sizable renovation, refreshing much of the common spaces and giving some wonderful upgrades to the rooms. And known as the “Grand Dame” of Carmel, it’s a hotel with some serious history.

If you’re after a property that is larger and has amenities like an on-site bar and restaurant, then this is it. It’s also one of the only properties in town to have a heated outdoor swimming pool, so it’s a great choice if traveling with kids.

Hotel Carmel

Vibe: Renovated hotel with a country-chic ambiance.
Budget:
$$
Best For:
All

I’ve stayed at Hotel Carmel a handful of times over the years, as it’s a wonderful choice just a few blocks from Ocean Avenue. I’d say the rooms and design here are more modern and minimal, with a cottage feel to it. The hotel is overall nice for mid-range, and the location is unbeatable as you’re quite close. At the hotel, there are also outdoor fire pits and even a jacuzzi. And in the morning, don’t miss the bagel bar that’s included with the stay.

Carmel Beach Hotel

Vibe: Seaside getaway with contemporary design
Budget
: $$
Best For:
All

Carmel Beach Hotel is one of the more quietly charming boutique hotels in Carmel and one of the closest to the beach in town. This is also one of the few hotels in town with an on-site wellness spa, so it is a nice amenity if you’re after this. Plus, don’t miss the on-site restaurant for guests only called Secoya. The restaurant is overseen by Chef Justin Cogley from the Michelin-starred restaurant, Aubergine.

Carmel Valley Ranch

Vibe: Luxury countryside resort with all amenities needed.
Budget:
$$$
Best For:
Couples, friends, or families

One of my favorite stays in the region is the resort with all of the amenities, Carmel Valley Ranch. I’ve been here a handful of times, and at only 15 minutes away from Carmel-by-the-Sea, it’s an easy place to stay if you want to be in nature and close to it all. The property is impressively set on 500 acres, and even has its own ranch with farm animals that you can interact with.

Their pool areas are lovely too; there’s even an entire kids’ pool with an activity room and things to do for all ages. This hotel sets up really well if you’re traveling in groups, as there are 180 rooms. While on the property, don’t miss the spa either; it’s fantastic.

L’Auberge Carmel

Vibe: Charming, timeless Carmel-by-the-Sea hotel with Michelin Star dining.
Budget
: $$$
Best For:
Adults and couples

Located in downtown Carmel, L’Auberge Carmel is one of the town’s most iconic boutique stays. I’d describe the vibe here as more of a refined retreat than a seaside escape. The property was originally built in 1929, so it feels historic, yet thoughtfully updated. With just 20 rooms, the experience is intimate and highly personalized.

The design here has rich fabrics, antique details, and a romantic, almost Parisian atmosphere. It’s location in the center of the village is perfect for walking to shops, restaurants, and the beach. making it an easy walk to shops, restaurants, and the beach.

What truly sets the property apart is its culinary reputation. Home to Aubergine, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, the hotel draws as much attention for its dining as it does for its accommodations. The tasting menu is highly seasonal and ingredient-driven, paired with an extensive wine cellar, creating one of the most elevated dining experiences on the Monterey Peninsula.

Cypress Inn

Vibe: Classic stay at an elegant inn
Budget
: $$$
Best For:
All

Set in the heart of downtown Carmel, Cypress Inn is a classic hotel, known as much for its personality as its history. Originally built in 1929 and closely associated with Doris Day, the inn has a distinctly classic, lived-in charm, with Mediterranean-style architecture and cozy, traditional interiors. It is also one of the most notable pet-friendly hotels in Carmel. Dogs are not just welcome, but fully part of the experience, which gives the property a more social and lively energy than many of the area’s quieter stays.

Bernardus Lodge & Spa

Vibe: Luxury vineyard hotel in Carmel Valley
Budget
: $$$
Best For:
All

Set in the hills of Carmel Valley, Bernardus Lodge & Spa offers a completely different experience from the coastal hotels in Carmel. Spread across 28 acres of vineyards, gardens, and rolling landscape, this is a hotel with a countryside feel. I stayed here a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed the luxury hotel and a phenomenal level of service. It earned 2 Michelin Keys this year. You also can’t beat the rooms here, with residential-style suites, many with fireplaces, soaking tubs, and private outdoor space, along with a strong focus on food, wine, and wellness.
