The Best Romantic Getaways in California
Romantic Getaways in Northern California
1. Farmhouse Inn (Sonoma)
If there is one place that comes to mind first, it’s the Farmhouse Inn located in Sonoma, California. We’ve stayed here several times and have recommended almost all of our friends here as well (Read about my recent stay). It’s just so good. The Farmhouse Inn is located down a country road in the area of Forestville, a short drive from Healdsburg. The hotel is romantic in so many ways — the spa, turndown service that includes fresh chocolate chip cookies + milk, a Michelin-star restaurant on property, and more. The setting itself is charming across from vineyards and in the woods. You’ll find most people there are in for a weekend celebrating an anniversary, a honeymoon, or just sneaking away to wine country. The price point is high and I’d consider it a “splurge” trip but it’s well worth the money. Plus, a three-course breakfast at the restaurant is included with your stay. Book the best rates here.
Address: 7871 River Rd, Forestville, CA 95436
2. The Harbor House Inn (Elk)
It’s a close tie with the Farmhouse Inn — if you’re looking for the best romantic coastal hotel in Northern California, it’s the Harbor House Inn. One of those hotels I can’t quite put into words how special it is, you have to experience it yourself (Read about my recent stay). Located in a small town called Elk, south of Mendocino, the inn sits above the ocean with incredible views. The rooms are cozy, most have soaking tubs. The highlight for me here is two things: the serene views and the food. It’s home to a Michelin star restaurant that is just incredible. Yes, this is one of those splurge hotels but again, so worth every penny. Another highlight is the warm breakfast served to your room. You’ll want to stay for a long weekend. Book the best rates here.
Address: 5600 CA-1, Elk, CA 95432
3. Mendocino, California
The whole area of Mendocino is ideal for a romantic weekend. You have everything you could possibly want here — beautiful hotels, iconic ocean views, and the charm of a small coastal town. It’s one of our personal go-to’s for a romantic weekend away in Northern California (Read A Weekend Guide to Mendocino). The drive is beautiful through the redwoods and as you make your way to the dramatic coast of Mendocino, it takes your breath away. There are several hotels to choose from. My favorites are:

- Mendocino Grove, for the best glamping stay

1. Book Your Flights
Use Skyscanner to find the best flights. It searches 100s of airlines and websites across the globe to ensure you’re not missing out on any route options or deals.
2. Book Your Accommodations
Use Booking.com for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.
3. Book Your Tours & Experiences
Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.
4. Book Your Car
Use Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.

Get a Priority Pass membership to gain access to 1,400+ VIP lounges and airport experiences worldwide. The Priority Pass app is the first thing I check when I have a layover. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and having a comfortable place to relax before and between flights makes air travel so much more enjoyable.
6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.
My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:
- World Nomads (best for all-around)
- Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)
