After calling Mallorca home for over a month, it was time I’d share my guide to visiting Valldemossa. It’s a must-see on any trip to Mallorca. The famed hilltop village set in the Tramuntana Mountains feels like a scene from a movie and is well worth a visit.
It’s not a secret that Mallorca is full of picturesque villages. The western side in particular is my personal favorite, feeling worlds’ away from the flatter, eastern side of the island. As you pass over the mountains, little towns start to appear in the distance.

I’ve been to Mallorca twice now, the second time on a more extended stay with my family. And on each of those trips, I’ve been at least twice to visit Valldemossa. It’s one of those *pinch me* kinds of villages, transporting you into what almost feels like a “Tuscany meets the Luberon” (if I could compare it).
Why Visit Valldemossa
On the latest trip, I was staying in the neighboring village of Deià, another personal favorite of mine on the island. It’s such an easy village to visit from there, or even if you’re staying in Palma de Mallorca. In my opinion, Valldemossa is the perfect day trip stop from anywhere on the western side of the island.
In the village, winding cobblestone alleyways and streets climb to the center plaza. Lined with local shops, restaurants, and nooks and crannies to explore, it’s the best spot to go for a meandering stroll. There are a few famous spots you can take or leave depending on your interests as well.
Whether you’re visiting Valldemossa on a day trip or considering it as a base for Mallorca, read on for my curated guide to plan your time there.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Valldemossa, Mallorca
What to Know Before You Visit Valldemossa
Getting to Valldemossa
To reach Valldemossa in Mallorca, you can start by flying into Palma de Mallorca Airport, which is the nearest major airport on the island. From there, you have several transportation options.
The Most Convenient Way is By Rental Car
The most convenient and scenic way is to hire a car for a picturesque drive through the scenic Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which leads directly to Valldemossa. Having a rental car is in my opinion a must for visiting this side of an island. It will give you total freedom to do day trips, visiting several locations in the area. When driving in Mallorca, try to opt for a small car — the roads are tight, parking spots tend to be small, and the hills are steep. I recommend Discover Cars for finding the best rental car deals.
Alternatively, you can also use public buses that operate from Palma to Valldemossa, providing an affordable and eco-friendly mode of transportation to this charming village.
Getting Around Valldemossa
If you’ve driven into Valldemossa, you’ll likely park at this parking lot if space is available (plan on arriving early to beat the crowds and tour buses!). I’d suggest keeping a few Euro coins with you as we found the parking machine credit card reader is often offline. From there, you can walk right into the heart of town and do everything on foot.
The Best Time to Visit Valldemossa
The best time to visit Valldemossa in Mallorca is during the spring and early summer, from April to June, and the early autumn months of September and October. During these periods, the weather is pleasantly warm, making it ideal for exploring the village’s cobblestone streets and enjoying outdoor activities without the scorching heat of summer. Additionally, you’ll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer season, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience of this picturesque mountain village.

When you go, order at the counter and then get a table.

You’ll love wandering along the narrow, cobblestone streets with their charming buildings with pretty flowers, cute shops, and cozy cafes. Stop by the Palace of King Sancho
I had to mention the Palace of King Sancho as it is a popular stop in Valldemossa. I can’t say it was my favorite but still worth mentioning as it’s a notable one. This historical palace gives you a look into Mallorca’s history and architecture, with several artifacts housed here.
Visit the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa
One of Valldemossa’s biggest attractions is the famous Carthusian Monastery, also known as La Cartuja de Valldemossa. This historic building, constructed in the 14th century by the King of Mallorca, later became the residence of Carthusian monks before transitioning into private ownership. In the winter of 1838-39, it was home to two notable guests: Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and French writer George Sand. Both found inspiration for some of their most famous works here.
Today, visitors can explore the monastery’s rich history, admire its beautiful architecture, and wander through its various rooms and chambers. Don’t forget to take in the breathtaking views of Valldemossa from its lush gardens and explore the 19th-century pharmacy inside. To cap off your visit, you can enjoy a 15-minute concert featuring music by Chopin.
After, Stop at Frédéric Chopin and George Sand Museum
While you’re at the Carthusian Monastery, you’ll want to visit the Frédéric Chopin and George Sand Museum. Another ticket is required to gain entrance, but it’s worth it as you’re right there. The museum showcases their personal artifacts, memorabilia, and the rooms they occupied during their stay. Visitors can gain insight into their creative processes, and appreciate the lasting impact of their artistic contributions.
Take a Day Trip to Deiá
This is arguably my favorite village on the island. It’s about 20-30 minutes from Valldemossa and easily done in the afternoon since it is so small. You can stroll the village, peruse boutiques, and eat many top restaurants in Mallorca. My guide to Deiá covers all of my favorite things to do and places to eat.
Where to Eat in Valldemossa
There are a handful of places in Valldemossa to eat at. The more formal restaurants most certainly need a reservation, so be sure to plan in advance.
Es Taller Valldemossa
Es Taller Valldemossa is a creative tapas eatery just a short stroll from the village center. Once an auto repair shop, it is now home to a fun and vibrant restaurant. Chef Nicolás Gago Aubert curates a menu featuring a blend of regional and globally-inspired dishes. Prepare for a leisurely dining experience in true Mallorcan fashion.
Barbaflorida Café
Set up on the top plaza, this is the one I pop into for a good coffee and homemade pastries. They’re known as well for all-day dining, so you can’t go wrong whenever you stop in.
Es Rosquissar Bar
I’ve stopped in here a few times now and it’s my favorite local spot to grab a bite. You’ll have a range of food here, from small bites to larger plates.
Can Costa Valldemossa
For those looking for paired-back Mallorcan cuisine, Can Costa is a wonderful choice. It’s just outside of town, so you will need a car, but nonetheless it has easy parking.
